Question 3. Describe Babur's
India conquest.
Or "Babur was the actual
founder of the Mughal Empire in India." Discuss
Or "Describe Babur's
early life and achievements.
Or "Babur possessed a
high degree of military talent." In the light of this statement, 'evaluate
his military talent.
Answer - Babur was born on
February 14, 1483. His father's name was Omar Sheikh Mirza. Omar Sheikh was the
fifth descendant of Timur and the owner of a small kingdom of Fargana. Babur's
mother's name was Kutluk Nigar, daughter of Yunus, a descendant of Genghis
Khan. Thus the blood of two great conquerors flowed in Babur's body. Babur became
the ruler of Fargana at the age of 11 after the untimely death of his father.
When he sat on the throne, he had many difficulties. He was most threatened by
his uncle Ahmed Mirza and maternal uncle Mahmud Khan. Both of them took
advantage of Babur's short-lived joint attack on Fargana twice, but Babur
resolutely confronted them and thwarted the attacks. Finally, they compromised
and went back to Samarkand. Thus Babur secured his kingdom from external
invasion, then strengthened his internal position.
Babur was an ambitious ruler.
After consolidating his position at Fargana, he wanted to conquer the capital
of Timur, Samarkand, which was under his covenant Ahmed Mirza. He attacked
Samarkand twice. He made his first attempt to conquer Samarkand in 1496 AD, but
he did not fail. In 1497 AD, he attacked Samarkand for the second time and also
got success, but his victory could not be sustained. In his absence, there was
a revolt in his kingdom Fargana. Babar marched Fargana from Samarkand to
suppress the rebellion, but before he reached there Fargana had the authority
of the rebels. The rebels placed Babur's half-brother Jahangir Mirza on the
throne, and the rest of the state was taken over by his maternal uncle, Mahmud
Khan. Babur returned to Samarkand again from Fargana, but the Uzbek Sardar
Shaibani Khan took control of Samarkand. Thus Fargana and Samarkand both left
Babar's hands.
- In 1501 AD when Babur was
wandering here and there after being defeated by Shaibani Khan, the same year
Ulugh Beg Mirza, the ruler of Kabul and uncle of Babur died. Taking advantage
of this situation, Babur attacked and captured Kabul in 1504 AD. Babur's
political life came to a standstill after the Kabul victory. He became the
ruler there and in 1507 he assumed the title of 'Emperor'.
Even after being the ruler of
Kabul, Babur could not end his longing to conquer Samarkand. In 1510 AD, news
of the death of his strong enemy Shaibani Khan was received while fighting Shah
Ismail of Iran in the war of Merv. Babur once again decided to win Samarkand.
He made a treaty with Shah Ismail and with his help in 1511 AD captured not
only Samarkand, but also Bukhara and Khorasan. Thus the vast empire of Central
Asia from Tashkent to Kabul came under his control. Babur's authority over
Samarkand and its adjacent territories proved to be ephemeral. In 1512, the
Uzbegs, led by the Uzbek leader, Ubaidullah Khan, defeated Babur and drove away
from Samarkand. Not only this, barring Bakshan, the empire of the entire
Central Asia passed out of Babur. In 1513 AD, Babur returned to Kabul, handing
over the management of Badakhshan to Khan Mirza.
Babar's victories -achievements
After Babur returned to Kabul, Daulat Khan defeated Alam Khan and took
control of the whole of Punjab. Alam Khan went to Kabul to seek help from
Babur. Babur asked the Mughal chieftains of Punjab to assist Alam Khan. When
Alam Khan came to India, he betrayed Babur and met Daulat Khan. Babur was very
angry at this and decided to conquer India alone.
(1) First
Battle of Panipat -
Babar marched from Kabul in November
1525 with the aim of conquering India and reached
Lahore without any hindrance. Daulat Khan Lodi, the ruler of Punjab, failed to
stop him. Babur made him a prisoner and after a few days he died in captivity.
Alam Khan Lodi also surrendered himself to Babur. Now Babur headed towards
Delhi. Ibrahim Lodi, the Sultan of Delhi, advanced to Punjab to counter him.
According to historians, there were only 12,000 soldiers in Babur's army,
while Ibrahim Lodi's army had one lakh soldiers. The two armies reached each
other in the field of Panipat. For a week both the armies stood face to face,
but neither had the courage to attack either. The war began on 21
April 1526. Ibrahim Lodi's army attacked Babur's army. Babur
prepared his army's armament efficiently and used the Tulugama method in
battle. Babur's army surrounded Lodi's army from three sides. Although the
Afghans fought with great valor, Babur's victory in this war was due to Babur's
arrogance, guns and artillery and Tulugama tactics, and Delhi's Sultan Ibrahim
Lodi was killed while fighting. Thus Babur became the authority of Delhi and
Mughal rule was established in India.
(2) War
of Khanwa -
Rana, ruler of Mewar. Sanga's belief
was that like other foreign invaders, Babur would also loot and return.
Possibly for this reason, he had assured to help Babur against Abraham Lodi.
But now Babur started strengthening his position in India. Rana Sanga was a
very brave and powerful king and all the Rajputs of North India were under his
influence. Hence, Babur had to fight the battle of Khanwa with Rana Sanga to
maintain his permanent empire in India. On March 16, 1527, there was a war between Babur and Rana Sanga at a place called Khanwa, 10
miles from Sikri. The cavalry of the Mughals and the invasion of cannons caused
a stampede in the Rajput army. In this war, Rana Sanga was badly injured and
had to withdraw from the battlefield. Babur won this battle and assumed the
title of 'Ghazi'. 4. Khanwa's war has an important place in the history
of India. This heralded an era in the history of India. This war brought an end
to Rajput power in North India.
(3) Battle of Chanderi -
After the battle of Khanwa, Babur turned his attention to Chanderi.
Chanderi was important to Babur from a strategic point of view. He was situated
on the borders of Malwa and Bundelkhand and the main road of Malwa and North
India passed through there. Chanderi was first under Malwa, but later the
Subedar Mednirai accepted the subjection of Rana Sanga and took part in the battle
of Khanwa on his behalf.
Babur did not think it appropriate to leave this powerful Rajput chieftain
free. The victory of Chanderi not only weakened the Rajput power, but also
paved the way for Babur's Malwa victory. Babur asked Mednirai to Chanderi in return
for Shamsabad, but he refused. On 29 January 1528, Babur surrounded the fort
of Chanderi. Mednirai was killed in this war and Babur was conquered. Babur
handed over the fort of Chanderi to Ahmad Shah, a descendant of the Malwa
rulers.
(4) Battle
of Ghaghra -
The Afghans were not completely
weakened even after they were defeated in the first battle of Panipat. Ibrahim
Lodi's brother Mahmud Lodi was organizing the Afghans and preparing for war
against Babur in Bihar. So Babur decided to suppress him. Mahmud Lodi had
annexed Nusrat Shah, the ruler of Bengal. In this regard, Babur warned Nusrat
Shah not to help the Afghans, but he
Ignored These people came to the Ghaghra River with a huge army. On May 6, 1529, a fierce battle ensued between Babur and the Afghans. The Afghans were
badly defeated in this war and Babur prevailed. Many Afghan chieftains came
under his shelter and Mahmud Lodi fled to Bengal.
The battle of Ghaghra was the last important war of Babur. Babur
established his empire in India from the Indus River to Bihar and from the
Himalayas to Gwalior and Chanderi. Babur's health deteriorated due to the
constant war and he died on 26 December 1530.
Thank you dear 🤗
